DAVID YARROW | WILD ENCOUNTERS
PETRA GUT CONTEMPORARY
Exhibition from June 1 – July 3 2018
Petra Gut Contemporary presents world-renowned photographer David Yarrow
Best known for his compelling, intimate photographs that capture both the majesty and the fragility of nature, David Yarrow, one of the best-selling fine art photographer, returns to Switzerland with a solo show of new works for Petra Gut Contemporary, Zürich.
These new works, captivatingly wrought as large-scale panoramas in Yarrow’s trademark silvery monochrome, explore humanity’s complex and often fraught relationship with the natural world.
Some of Yarrow’s photographs result from a combination of luck, split-second timing and nerves of steel. The emotive work The Walk of Life, which depicts a mother and baby elephant walking calmly towards the camera, was taken from a staggeringly close distance, with Yarrow leaping out of the way just in time. Similarly, for Good Morning Siberia, and Members Only, stunning portraits of an endangered Siberian tiger and a gelada baboon, Yarrow found himself in the right time and place, just meters away from these majestic wild animals, in a position where few humans are lucky enough to find themselves.
In other works, Yarrow composes the images with the skill and attention to detail of a Renaissance painter. Getting the shot for Last Supper involved shooting in a Montana ghost town in -10 degrees with a bear and feuding locals, and White Horses necessitated driving semi-wild Icelandic horses across a black beach in gale-force winds.
Whether his photographs result from careful staging or split-second timing in the wild, there is a wry and knowing humour that carries throughout Yarrow’s work, which combines with an obvious empathy for his subjects to give a unique take on the world we live in, and the way we encounter it.
David Yarrow was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966. He took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old, he found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, David took the famous picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and as a result, he was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other sporting events. But he refused to be pigeonholed and his interests expanded as he grew into himself. It was only many years later, that he found his true comfort zone in documenting the natural world and the last eight years have been career defining. At Sotheby’s photography auction in New York in April 2018 - Yarrow’s iconic image – The wolf of main street- was sold for $100,000.
