Luciano Castelli „REVOLVING PAINTINGS“
Exhibition: 10 December 2016 - 25 February 2017
Opening: 9 Dezember 2016 / 6 - 9 pm
PLUTSCHOW GALLERY is delighted to present the exhibition "Revolving Paintings" by Luciano Castelli. The exhibition contains new works from the series "Revolving Paintings" and a small number of earlier works from the 1980ies. The exhibition runs parallel to the exhibition "Hinter jedem Berg steht noch ein Berg" (Behind each mountain there is another mountain) in the Helmhaus Zürich.
The exhibition in the Helmhaus Zürich, which runs from December 8, 2016 through February 5, 2017, originates in the encounter of the two acknowledged painters Prof. Tan Ping and Luciano Castelli. 2014 they had their first exhibition „China's abstraction and figurative painting in the west“ in the National Art Museum in Beijing. 2015 they continued their dialogue in a second exhibition in SPSI Art Museum in Shanghai.
Castelli invented the style "Revolving Paintings" at Pigalle, the cultural melting pot of Paris. It intends to read a painting from various perspectives and thus, redefine the medium as such. These differentiated perspectives of each painting show contents which are not obvious at first sight. They demand a flexibility and openness for different angles of views where they aim for tolerance and co-existance in a constantly broader cultural world. The works in our exhibition which are driven by an engine are the latest works by the artist. Through the automatic turning of the paintings the views of the works change constantly and show multiple perspectives in colourful tension or in strong black and white contrasts. They characterize and mirror the multi cultural realities and challenges of today's society.
Luciano Castelli works in different medias such as painting, photography, video and sculpture. From the very beginning he takes his world creating power primarily from himself and his close environment. He plays the central role in his productions be it in his films, photographies and paintings where he appears in different characters in a multitude of roles. He thereby casts himself as leading actor and dreams himself in ficticious worlds.
In Berlin, Luciano Castelli belonged to the anti-establishment movement of painters called „Junge Wilde“, who became very famous and had world wide success in the late 1970ies and 1980ies through their strong, expressive and gestural paintings.
Castelli, born in Switzerland in 1951, was discovered by Harald Szeemann who included him at Dokumenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 and thus, put him on the map of the international art world.
