Las Vegas, Nevada, January 18, 2019. Priscilla Fowler Fine Art is honored to present two outstanding artists in an exhibit of new studies focusing on birds that permanently reside or frequent the state of Nevada. These new paintings also acknowledge the migratory nature of many of these birds and their ability to freely traverse across the imagined boundary lines established by our governments. Depio, born in the Phillipines, immigrated to the United States in 2002; and Johnson, born in Illinois, is many generations removed from his ancestors' immigration to the US. In Birds of NV, both artists translate their own perspectives on the often and recently-debated topic of immigration through the depiction of local birdlife.
Las Vegas-based Filipino painter Gig Depio presents the conjunctions of contemporary and historical forces in the form of intense, often large-scale, figurative compositions. Recipient of the 2016 Nevada Arts Council Fellowship Grant in Painting, he has exhibited across Nevada, with shows at the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, the University of Nevada Las Vegas, the University of Nevada in Reno, and the Clark County Winchester Cultural Center Gallery, Las Vegas. In his native Philippines he worked for several years as an apprentice to his father, the artist Prof. Gig C. De Pio, Sr.
Darren Johnson holds an MFA from Bowling Green State University and was a 2011 recipient of the Nevada Arts Council Artist Fellowship Grant. He has previously exhibited in solo and group shows across the US; however, Birds of NV marks his first exhibit after a five year break from painting. Johnson currently works as the galleries coordinator for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.
