PROYECTOSMONCLOVA is pleased to announce the opening of de Métrico a Imperial by Ištvan Išt Huzjan (Ljubljana, Slovenia, 1981). The artist’s first exhibition in Mexico brings together sculptural and photographic documentation of the artist’s site specific performances, as well as an artist book pop-up to include his editorial projects curated by Francis Horn and Jo Ying Peng.
Huzjan’s work shifts between media to establish relationships between materials and ephemeral phenomena, thus interrogating the mechanisms of representation within contemporary visual art. This deeply personal work situates the artist’s personal space and experience in the center stage. His performances, use simple actions such as walking to consider the distances between people, spaces and even single steps as basic unit of locomotion. In these works, the artist muses on society, historical facts, geography, and the relationships between individuals.
Huzjan is a recent winner of the Grand Prize of the 31st Biennial of Graphic Arts awarded by the MGLC International Centre of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam. His work has been exhibited in various international institutions including: The Modern Gallery and Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MG+MSUM), Ljubljana, Slovenia; Museum of Contemporary Art of Korea, Seoul, Korea; SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin, Germany; and the 51st Venice Biennial, Venice, Italy.
Huzjan is also the co-founder of artist run exhibition spaces Project Goleb, Amsterdam, and Coffre Fort, Brussels.
