Speaking of his paintings in the New York Times, McGinness said, “They use the visual language of universal sign systems and therefore give the illusion that they are communicating blunt pedestrian information, but they undermine that same visual language by evading elucidation.” (August, 2016)
Quint Projects is pleased to present Ocular Evidence, Ryan McGinness’ fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. This exhibition of new paintings and cyanotypes provides evidence of the many different bodies of work McGinness has been exploring in recent years—from self-reflective Studio Views with process-referencing subject matter to iconic Signals, Skateboards, Mindscapes, and Black Holes. Large and small works, both colorful and monochromatic, fill the gallery exemplifying the artist’s range within his signature graphic aesthetic. “Ocular evidence” is a term McGinness came across while doing research for a large-scale public art project commissioned by the US government to be completed in 2018 at the San Ysidro/Tijuana border crossing.
Concurrent with his exhibition at Quint Projects is a solo exhibition of McGinness’ work at the Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Nearby, in downtown Detroit, McGinness recently opened a public art installation and skate park with professional skateboarder, Tony Hawk.
