Ricco/Maresca Gallery’s program for the Outsider Art Fair (NY, 2018), will consist of a collection of material by classic and contemporary Outsider and Self-Taught artists Bill Traylor (ca. 1854-1949), Henry Darger (1892-1973), Martín Ramírez (1895-1963), William Hawkins (1895-1990), Hiroyuki Doi (b. 1946), Gil,Batle (b. 1962), and George Widener (b. 1962). Resuming a concept we launched at the 2017 fair, we will once again be working in cooperation with Austria’s Galerie Gugging--presenting both booths as adjunct, collaborative spaces; a symbolic convergence of American Outsider Art and European Art Brut.
The history of the Gugging House of Artists dates back to 1954, when psychiatrist Leo Navratil administered diagnostic drawing tests to his patients at the Maria Gugging Psychiatric Clinic, unexpectedly discovering artistically talented individuals in his ward. At the OAF 2018, Gugging's space will showcase a selection of works on paper created in their House of Artists and Open Studio Program--by August Walla (1936-2001), Heinrich Reisenbauer (b. 1938), Leopold Strobl (b. 1960), and Günther Schützenhöfer (b. 1965), among others.
The curatorial thread in this diverse presentation aligns with our ongoing mission: fostering dialogue and formal crossover between the Outsider and Self-Taught arenas and modern and contemporary art.
