“I am always looking for that particular, peculiar emotive space.”
White’s powerfully understated paintings on linen, small in scale, are effective because her formal rigor prompts a different way of seeing. Engaging with painting’s most basic elements: color, shape, and composition, White’s worlds of slicing shapes and tilting planes suggest a surprising and deep space. From a seemingly singular, muted color family she makes multiple variants of hue emerge. The resulting paintings are nearly monochrome and evoke a range of different temperatures and sensations; the spectral effects of these color explorations belie her medium.
”These fractured, complex spaces confound, but, in their delicacy, they draw you in” (McQuaid). White’s modest works invite close looking while exerting a physical presence that is ambiguous and unexpectedly expansive.
Nancy White’s work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions at Jancar Jones Gallery, San Francisco and Los Angeles, CA; Steven Zevitas Gallery, Boston, MA; and Takada Gallery, San Francisco, CA. Group exhibitions include Transmitter Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; the Palo Alto Art Center, Palo Alto; UC Berkeley Museum of Art, Berkeley CA; 2nd Floor Projects, San Francisco CA; the San Jose Institute of Contemporary, San Jose, CA; Higgins Art Gallery, Barnstable, MA; the Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland, OR; the Los Gatos Art Museum, Los Gatos, CA; Busdori, Tokyo, Japan; and Paris Concret, Paris, France. Her work can be found in the collections of the UC Berkeley Art Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the Crocker Museum, Sacramento, CA to name a few.
