RxArt worked with Dan Colen to create the organization’s most ambitious project to-date, an installation throughout the Activity Center at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children in Bayside, New York. Colen’s vibrantly colored artwork activates the walls and ceilings of the 2,500 square foot Activity Center, which is one of the most frequently used spaces at St. Mary’s. Taking inspiration from his “confetti” paintings, Colen’s installation consists of vibrant, larger than life, hand-painted confetti, swirling across the walls and ceiling of the Center. Colen’s confetti series works exist both as Mylar confetti adhered to canvas and as trompe l’oeil oil paintings. To achieve this effect for the RxArt project, Colen’s design for the space was brought to life by hand painting every falling piece of rainbow-colored and metallic confetti. The encompassing mural brings delight and inspiration to the space, stimulating social interaction between patients.
The St. Mary’s healthcare system serves a community of over 2,000 children and adolescents living with acute special needs and complex medical conditions, both inpatient and outpatient, annually. The Activity Center is used for indoor recreation and sports, arts activities, talent shows, school programs and performances.
RxArt is deeply grateful to Florence and Serge Azria for their generous support of this RxArt Project.
