Lawrence Kupferman (American painter, 1909-1982) was born in Boston and as a teenager attended the high school art program at the Museum of Fine Arts in his home city. He went on to an extensive arts education and apprenticed with an etcher and an architect before connecting with other abstractionists of the east coast in the mid-1940s. Kupferman was associated with Abstract Expressionism, but even before its heyday, he developed his own style of expressive mark-making that evoked the expanses of the microscopic and the universal.
