Exhibition on View January 7, 2017 through February 11, 2017
DALLAS, TEXAS – December 1, 2016 – Samuel Lynne Galleries is pleased to announce the opening reception for photographer Tyler Shields’ exhibition “Provocateur” on January 7, 2017 from 5-8pm. Shields will be in attendance at the opening reception, which will also serve as a launch for his latest book Provocateur. The exhibition will be on view until February 11, 2017.
Tyler Shields is known for his unique brand of volatile and off-handed celebrity photography and has come to be recognized as "Hollywood's Favorite Photographer." The meaning behind his work goes so much deeper than the famous faces and materials inhabiting it. Often using dark and controversial subject matter, his photography challenges convention, forcing the viewer to contemplate the true nature of human existence. Shields’ willingness to test boundaries has earned him praise from critics around the world, with GQ Magazine stating, “while big-shot Hollywood producers once demanded a trophy Banksy canvas…now all they want is one of Shields' gloriously twisted photographs."
The images curated for the Provocateur exhibition represent Shields’ trademark edgy, and often risqué, style. Daring and suggestive, Shields’ photographs push the envelope to create a thought-provoking experience for each viewer. Each photograph in the exhibition contains its own unique dialogue, with subjects ranging from historical figures to representations of modern materialism. The uniting source behind the work is Shields’ aversion to conformity. No stranger to controversy, he is certainly not afraid to shock his viewers. Best said by Shields himself, “it's not my job to explain it or tell you what you should think about it. It's my job to make it. That's what a provocateur does.”
Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Fla. on April 29, 1982, and moved to Los Angeles over a decade ago. After beginning his career directing music videos, Shields quickly moved to still photography. Shields’ list of celebrity subjects makes his photography notably eye-catching. His collaborators have included Zachary Quinto, Emma Roberts, Francesa Eastwood, Twilight’s Ashley Greene, Glee’s Heather Morris, Hayden Panettiere, Justin Long, Backstreet Boy Howie Dorouge, and Lindsay Lohan. Shields’ work has earned international acclaim and is featured in many notable collections around the world.
