Inaam Zafar (b. 1988) is a painter and visual artist based in Lahore.
Inaam produces evocative, unsaturated but luminous paintings through which he mostly explores shared narratives and customs. Believing in the strength of material itself, rather than as an illustrative device, Inaam investigates and questions the place of painting in the local milieu—and its apparent inability to generate a substantial legacy that stands beside miniature painting in Pakistan.
The impetus of each work begins with a photograph or a film still, printed, lived with and drawn for some time, until it becomes an object on its own. The source of the image is subdued and obliterated through the process; as Inaam puts it, “to the extent that the image reduces to just a feeling without leaving its place.”
His most recent exhibition is Without, a solo project at Sanat Gallery, Karachi.
