Sarasin Art is proud to exhibit Art – Light, a double showing of the artist
Martin Kammler and of Onorio Mansutti, artist and photographer. Currently both are based in Basel. Martin Kammler is a painter who brings his emoti-ons to the canvas and Onorio Mansutti is a photographer who plays with let-ters to create quotations of famous authors.
Martin Kammler is inspired by the German author Hermann Hesse and in particular, his Works of Narcissus and Goldmund. Narcissus is looking for the logic, the scientific and even for the divine, Goldmund however portrays the wanderer and artist. These contrasts are depicted in Kammler’s paintings, with the showing of playful elements and exact forms.
In his series Face yourself, Kammler looks into the eyes and what they
constantly perceive. There tends to be chaos around us and our mind tries to
make sense of it. Looking at a face of a man, we see the different situations
the face is showing Us. For example, in looking at Face yourself 1, 2019; the observer sees a face with two large eyes and a large mouth. It brings to mind the image of a skull. Around this image, Kammler depicts all the influences coming together as a face.
Onorio Mansutti combines photography with literature by taking photos of
letters he finds for example in advertisement. He combines these letters into full sentences and quotations of his favorite authors. With light, he makes his
quotations visible and creates impressive works. One example is his work, The Universe and stupidity, 2018. The German sentence, built of all these single Letters forms a synthesis of the art.
Mansutti plays with quotations of the literature and literature influences Kammler’s Works. Together they create exciting moments with combined Art and Light.
Kammler originally coming from Essen (Germany) lived in New York for many
years and had an exhibition in the Trump Tower. Further exhibitions showed
his works in Milan, Zurich and Berlin. He draws inspiration not only from Hermann Hesse but also William de Kooning.
Mansutti has made a name as an international fashion photographer. Three years ago he showed a retrospective of the last 50 years. With his quotations he has found a new way to combine both photography and literature.
