Scott Nichols Gallery Grand Opening on the Sonoma Square
Photographs of the wine-producing regions of California and elsewhere
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 28, 1-5 pm
Exhibition On View: September 28 – December 2, 2019
Scott Nichols Gallery is pleased to present their grand opening exhibition, Wine Country, on the Sonoma Square. The exhibit will feature a survey of photographs of wine-producing regions, including the production, storage, and consumption of wine.
Photographs on view will include work from the 1956 Death of a Valley project by Dorothea Lange and Pirkle Jones. Lange described the project as the most meaningful of her career, and the exhibition was definitive for American Photography at the time. The project documented the final year of life in the Berryessa valley, before the region was flooded for the Monticello Dam, and became Lake Berryessa.
Around the same time as the construction of Monticello Dam and the destruction of Berryessa Valley, Ansel Adams was commissioned by the Paul Masson vineyards to photograph the wine making process in 1959. The gallery will exhibit original Adams’ murals from this project. These murals originally come from the collection of Otto Meyer.
Photographs from other wine-producing regions will also be featured. The exhibit will include a number of tourist snapshots of Italian wine and wine-producing regions from the 1920s and ‘30s as well as iconic work of France by Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Scott Nichols Gallery will host the Grand Opening Reception for Wine Country on the Sonoma Square, Saturday, September 28th, 1-5 pm.
The exhibition will feature photographers such as: Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, William Garnett, Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Eugene Atget, Pirkle Jones and Max Yavno, among others.
