A tape runs on in silence
As we try to perceive sound aurally or physically when sound is very loud, so that not only our eardrums vibrate, but our whole body. Graphical music notation is converted by musicians in initially unheard sound before it is made audible by an instrument.

In the exhibition Jens Standke will show works in an installation that arose in Tilburg. Equipped with the specially prepared tapes, he is invited by Tilburgers to make field recordings on site of extraordinary places in the city. These sound recordings are presented as a sound installation, as images and as projections in a large scale installation.

Recorded and played back
Sound is inscribed truthfully in physical sound carriers. Sound waves have left physical impression such as in a wax cylinder. A needle creates hills and valleys and these can be heard by a different stylus. Voices, music, ambient sounds can be recorded and played back. The sound creates an image of itself – if we humans have a corresponding apparatus.
Rainer Maria Rilke’s thought experiment, sampling the crown seam of human skull by phonograph to produce an original sound is the basic idea of my thoughts: In which objects can we find sounds, that we must first make visible in order to to make it audible. The sounding of this “shadow sound” requires an apparatus that is designed for this sole purpose alone.
The audiotape is actually a simple object, and it does not work with physical enrollments but with magnetic differences. However not every object is equipped with magnetic charge. Therefore a somewhat simplified form of an audiotape – an adhesive tape – is used together with and the following experiment: An adhesive tape with the length of 10m is first rolled on the ground, it adheres dirt, dust and other remains. This tape is then put in a special machine, where it is scanned. A laser converts the differences of light into sound. Duct tape becomes audiotape. Taping and detaching is the recording process thus surfaces become sound carriers.

Jens Standke
Emerging artist Jens Standke (b. 1982 in Georgsmarienhütte) lives and works in Berlin and Cologne, Germany. He graduated with distinction from Academy of Media Arts Cologne. He was awarded the Cologne Design Award 2013 at the Museum of Applied Art (Cologne) for his project Vinylaktiten / Vinylagmiten. He exhibited in Germany at the European Media Art Festival, at the Festival Beyond 3D at ZKM in Karlsruhe and presented at the Open source Festival in Dusseldorf. His works also featured at Ars Electronica Linz, Austria and on Bayern Alpha TV.
His projects usually address a medial paradox of time perception. In static and moving images, as in sculptures or installations, the ratio of recording processes and their pictures are questioned. The works are strongly influenced by a time-logic scanning. The work adresses temporal succession depicting the spatial juxtaposition.

Collaborative project
A collaborative exhibition project that aims at supporting artist practices by creating new production and international exposure. SEA Foundation teams up with Das Esszimmer from Bonn, Germany. Emerging media artist Jens Standke shows a new, specially created for Tilburg sound and media installation in a solo at SEA Foundation, Tilburg, the Netherlands. Concurrently established Dutch visual artist Stijn Peeters exhibits in a solo show in Bonn. Stijn Peeters shows a new body of work in his 'Grande Machines' series. Chios Idomeni 1824-2016. Accompanying the exhibition Stijn Peeters launches an manual riso-printed artist book titled 10.000, in an edition of 50, at the opening reception on 27 August 2016 at Das Esszimmer|Raum für Kunst in Bonn, Germany.
