SEZON ART GALLERY 1F is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled “Figure of Unconsciousness” by Yuuka ASAKURA.
The human body (or figure) can be classified into different attributes from moment to moment, including in terms of gender and physique, and the surrounding environment. The cutting into the image of this corporeality is in truth the act of painting. To rub and pull at this corporeality is to place the physical existence of paint onto the surface of the canvas, and to leave in its place a state of unconsciousness.
Yuuka ASAKURA was presented with the shu uemura award in the Tokyo Marunouchi 2014 Art Awards, in 2015 her painting and drawing work was used in the collection of fashion brand icon Yohji Yamamoto, and from the end of last year until March of this year she garnered a lot of attention when she and fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto presented their work in a exhibition at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery.
For the artwork in this exhibition, using a motif of the human figure, an outline has been painted and then this has been broken down. The figure that is being painted is deconstructed and reconstructed in terms of the elements of paintwork such as colour and brushstrokes, it is an exchange with the dense picture that lies on the canvas, and by the use of extended strokes of the brush and vivid colours an unclear shape emerges.
In the artwork presented in this exhibition, the inherent communication of making things that is intrinsic to Yohji Yamamoto who makes clothes based on philosophy and spirituality, and the words of philosopher Kiyokazu Washida that original ideas in artwork come from body theory through fashion, are representative of the encounter with the world of fashion which has led to a momentum of inspiration for this young artist. We look forward to welcoming you to our gallery and introducing you to this exhibition by Yuuka ASAKURA, whose new work continues to evolve beyond the frame of the picture.
