SMAC Gallery opened in 2006 on the first floor of the historic De Wet building in Church Street, Stellenbosch and soon consolidated a reputation for presenting large, museum-standard modern and contemporary exhibitions, accompanied by well-researched publications. In 2011, SMAC opened a second gallery in central Cape Town to expand the scope of its activities. In November 2014, SMAC relocated its Cape Town gallery to a newly renovated 1200m2 space in the gallery precinct of Woodstock.
SMAC represents established and emerging South African artists as well as international artists and artists from the African continent. While pursuing a dynamic programme of exhibitions and projects that contributes towards artistic discourse in the country and the continent, the gallery also participates in national and international art fairs. SMAC further supports international exchange by hosting and exhibiting well-known international artists whilst facilitating collaborative ventures with various galleries and institutions that provide opportunities for South African and African artists abroad.
