SMAC Gallery is pleased to present shady tactics, a group exhibition curated by Thuli Gamedze. Participating artists include Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Callan Grecia, Bonolo Kavula, Mitchell Gilbert Messina, Katleho Mosehle, and Sitaara Stodel.
Appropriative strategies are publicly available. Because edges and margins exist on the outsides of centres and status quos, to appropriate just means to use space, tech, images, and systems that in their original forms are unattainable, but also un-useful to the resistant character. The appropriation of the technologies and infrastructures of coloniality is a necessary past-time.
dropping snarky comments from the back corners of regressive guest lectures,
falling apart at art fairs,
shady tactics and secret meetings,
burning bridges and bad behaviour as the root of an artistic career.
Shady tactics rest in the potential of discards of global capital to outline and enact ideas of resistance, refusal and social existence that are as unfeasible as they are urgent. To toy with things is a serious business.
