Franky Cruz – Sistema
Opening Reception: Wednesday, March 16, 2016, 6-9pm
Franky Cruz presents Sistema, his second solo exhibition with the gallery.
In a suite of new works, blue velvet serves as the medium for poetic interventions. Performances by snails and slugs are documented, creating viscous lines that swerve and curve, leaving organic and iridescent mucus trails upon their surfaces. Cruz recontextualizes these natural processes into controlled, and manipulated, environments, turning these creatures into painters of the highest expression. Velvet absorbs and mucus reflects – sensuous and seductive.
Cruz also forms a series of pupation transfers, where he directs caterpillar chrysalis formations onto floral textiles, harvested from discarded furniture. These once domestic objects now become canvases for transformation, almost mimicking the natural environment in which these creatures came from. The chrysalises, where butterflies once existed, now remain vacant.
The organic collaborates with the inorganic, creating frozen moments in time. Viscous trails and ornate empty shells, all valueless natural residues, now become valued artifacts.
Exhibition runs through April 23, 2016.
