Two mid-western artists come together for this stunning exhibition at the Springfield Art Association. In Constructed Comfort, Jessica Bingham and Carrie Gillen, consider the complexity of home. The exhibition runs from Friday, May 3rd through Saturday, May 27th in the M. G. Nelson Gallery on the SAA campus. The reception will be held on Friday, May 10th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm with artist’s talks at 6:45. This is free and open to the public.
Jessica Bingham, (www.JessicaBinghamArt.com) currently resides in Peoria and works as a curator for at the Illinois State University in Bloomington/Normal. She has a BA in painting from Monmouth College and a MFA in painting from Bradley University. The work that she created for this exhibition began during her stay here in Springfield as part of the Enos Park Artist-in Residence program at the SAA. The Enos Park neighborhood reminded her the neighborhood where she grew up and how she correlated the vacant lots with unintentional green and park spaces for the residents. These lots create a form of respite in the urban chaos and patterns of green throughout the neighborhood. She recognized a similar pattern here that spurred her work.
Carrie Gillen (www.carriegillen.com) lives and works in St. Louis. She earned a BA in Studio Arts from Loyola University of New Orleans and a MFA in Studio Arts from Southern Illinois University. The sculptural wall pieces displayed in this exhibition utilize the materials of residential construction and decoration --drywall, ceramic tile, upholstery fabrics, mirrors and plants –and mixes them with the actions and drama of everyday life that happens in domestic spaces. The result is a depiction of the messy side of domestic life.
The combination of the works by these two artists is visually striking and powerful. Both artists have shown work across the Midwest. The Springfield Art Association is pleased to bring them together for this show.
The gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 and Saturday 10 to 3.
The SAA Campus is located at 700 North 4th Street in Springfield.
