CARLO ALFANO. STANZA PER VOCI
The project presented by the gallery at Art Basel Feature 2017 reconstructs part of the exhibit titled "4 Aus Italien, Alfano, di Bello, Calzolari, Paolini" held at the Kunsthalle in Bern in 1974.
The work by Carlo Alfano (1932-1990) is centered on the representation of space and time and, more specifically, on the contradictory relationship between logic and perception in the classical spatial representation.
The three epoch-making works, "Stanza per Voci", "Frammenti di un autoritratto anonimo n°1" and "Distanze" are emblematic of the artist’s poetics.
In "Stanza per voci" a metallic frame becomes the venue of a temporal representation: a magnetic audio tape placed across the empty space of a frame, marks the seconds, words and silences in audio-fragments which involve the spectator. The sound of voices is emitted from two slits in the frame thus filling and modelling the space in the room.
In "Frammenti di un autoritratto anonimo n. 1" Alfano transcribed audio fragments on a large canvas in the form of sequenced seconds, silences and phrases which reflect the temporality of "Stanza per Voci". These fragments correspond to an anonymous time unrelated to any chronology.
In "Distanze" is addressed the theme of the contradictory relationship between logic and perception. A vanishing line drawn on the floor invites us to follow a certain perspective towards two canvases joined together and placed in the corner of the room.
