Hilario believes fundamentally in the importance of viewer interpretation. “My art is what can’t be spoken but only sensed by the Soul, expressed by the Heart and explained by the Mind”, Hilario explains.
The artist characteristically creates, on the canvas, a prism of conjoined colors with incessant variation in hue, value and intensity further complicated by variations in pattern, direction, texture and layering. The result each time is a powerfully expressive work that invites the viewer to engage, interpret and respond.
The exhibition will include all new works and be on view in the Main Gallery space at 652 Canyon Road. Hilario will attend the opening reception on Friday, July 10th from 5-7pm.
Hilario always identified with the spirit of the American Southwest. His life-long yearning to express this identity in visual form came, almost instantly into being during a trip to Monument Valley in Arizona on New Year’s Day, 1994. Quite simply, he returned home and began to paint. He was drawn to acrylics as his medium and he experimented with color and form. He studied the work of master artists, in particular Gerhard Richter and Dan Namingha, to develop and perfect his technique. Within a year he was selling his work, and has never looked back.
