Santa Fe, NM - Tansey Contemporary is pleased to present “The Sky is the Water”, a solo exhibition of new works by Sheryl Zacharia, on display beginning August 12 through September 2, 2016 at 652 Canyon Road, Santa Fe NM. The exhibition will include new ceramic sculptures as well as works on paper and paintings by Zacharia.
Born and raised in New York, At Southampton College Zacharia majored in painting but spent many years as a singer-songwriter performing in the NYC club circuit for over ten years. Missing her visual arts roots, she began working in clay, studying and working in various Potteries. Today, Zacharia’s works are exhibited both locally and nationally and reside in museum, public and private collections worldwide.
Though she admittedly considers herself a diehard New Yorker, she has recently moved to Santa Fe. The impact of the move is beautifully reflected in the body of work selected for this exhibition, Zacharia’s first solo show since relocating.
“Since making the drastic move from the northeast to the southwest, I’ve experienced a dramatic shift in ideas, palettes, forms, and rhythms. Many asked me if I would miss the water, but the rivers and oceans have been replaced with the most beautiful skies I have ever seen. I am constantly in awe of the sunsets, cloud forms, and starry nights,” Zacharia explains.
The natural beauty of the Southwest has inspired Zacharia to paint again, something she now also has the space and time to do for the first time. “I won’t leave my past behind; the urban life and surroundings are forever engrained in me and will continue to be reflected in my work. A blending of two very different worlds and lives will permeate my creativity and am glad and grateful for the inspiration of both."
