Tansey Contemporary is pleased to present “White”, a solo exhibition of new works by mixed media artist Thomas Roth, on view at 652 Canyon Road, from February 12 through March 4, 2016.
Roth describes his work as “a process based abstraction.” He sculpts three-dimensional reliefs and forms of items such as hardware cloth, cable ties and plastic straws. Leveraging the iconic identities of these commercial and industrial materials, Roth presses them further into the realm of abstract seduction. To Roth, the breadth and diversity of materials that can be adapted to an artistic context seems limitless.
In “White”, Roth explores this context specifically within the confines of an all white palette, emphasizing texture, material and tactile expression. Roth explains, “The more basic the color, the more inward and pure. White is not a mere absence of color; it is as fierce as red and affirmative as black. I could paint in many colors; but could never paint with such gaudy elegance as when I paint in white.”
“White” marks Roth’s first solo exhibition at Tansey Contemporary and his first solo show since moving to Santa Fe in 2012 to practice art full time. Born in Sweden, Roth’s works were exhibited at a young age in an emerging artist’s show at the Swedish National Museum of Art. After years working in the corporate realm in the US and showing his work on the side in galleries in New York, Roth has truly found his artistic inspiration and style in Santa Fe. The body of work he’s created in this new chapter of life culminates in “White”, which also sets the stage for the continued expansion and evolution of his repertoire.
The opening reception will be held on Friday February 12, 5-7pm at Tansey Contemporary, 652 Canyon Road Santa Fe NM. The artist will be present.
