RENOWNED ARTIST JAMES HAYWARD TO EXHIBIT AT TELLURIDE GALLERY
July 6 - July 31
TELLURIDE— Telluride Gallery will feature an exhibition of James Hayward’s tactile monochromatic abstract paintings from July 6 - July 31. The exhibit focuses on Hayward’s second main body of work (1984 to present). These paintings with their thick impasto differ greatly from his previous body of work comprised of flat color showcasing the artist’s anonymity. Hayward is renowned for producing textural and bold paintings that utilize color and rhythm as key elements. His use of saturated and intense color studies in monochrome or blended multicolor works allow the viewer to witness color blending directly on canvas. Hayward’s heavy brush stroke seems to defy gravity, applying the medium to the vertical surface allowing the paint to seemingly suspend in the air. Ranging from vivid purples to minimal white, each of the 21 paintings is built up to showcase the ridges undulating across the piece. Hayward will visit Telluride from July 5 through July 9, and will provide an artist talk at the exhibition opening.
Of the 21 paintings, Telluride Gallery will showcase 9 of Hayward’s diptychs. Comprised of two panels, the left and right side began with the same 4 colors. A deliberate decision has been made to leave the left barely blended and the right further worked, creating a unique 5th color. The result is an engaging exploration of color blending, and further insight to Hayward’s process. “Control is the bugaboo of art,” Hayward said. “You have to pay attention, but you don’t want to have control.”
“I would describe Hayward's paintings as visual meditations. The mind gets lost while the eye dances across the surface. It's amazing to me how his works continue to reveal themselves to the viewer the longer they stay. I have literally seen people transform with amazement in front of his work. I understand this reaction,” said Ashley Hayward, owner of Telluride Gallery.
The California-based artist has been a force amongst the Post-war Minimalist Abstract Artists in the Los Angeles area for over 35 years. “Hayward’s command of paint, ranging from blissful spontaneity to profound control, separates him from artists who are lured into a signature style...He is a true independent, with his own fearless vision of the kinds of paintings he wants to make and see,” described art critic, Frances Colpitt. His works have been featured in numerous prestigious museums including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Denver Museum of Modern Art; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
