The Burns Archive & Press The Photography Show 2018, presented by AIPAD
The Burns Archive and Press produces photographic history books on unexplored areas of history, art and photography. BA publications (postmortem, forensic, medical, war, painted tintypes, manipulated, Japanese…) are collected for unique subject matter and artistic presentation.
The Burns Archive and Press has produced photographic history books and articles for over 40 years. We specialize in unexplored areas of history, art and photography. Texts on the topics of postmortem, forensic, medical, painted tintypes, and manipulated photography are pioneer works that stimulated photography collecting and exhibitions. We will present two books in our new photographic history series by Stanley B. Burns, MD and his daughter Elizabeth A. Burns, Mensur & Schmiss: German Dueling Societies (with J Lawrence Burns) and Setting Sun: Painted Photographs of Meiji Japan. On display will be many of our previous publications, including the world-renowned Sleeping Beauty Series on memorial and postmortem photography, along with other acclaimed Burns Archive books including Stiffs, Skulls & Skeletons: Medical Photography and Symbolism, Deadly Intent: Crime & Punishment, Shooting Soldiers: Civil War Medical Photography, Forgotten Marriage: The Painted Tintype & The Decorative Frame 1860-1910, News Art: Manipulated Photographs, Mirror, Mirror: The Burns Collection Daguerreotypes, Geisha: A Photographic History 1872-1912, Skin Pictures: Masterpiece Photographs of Nineteenth Century Dermatology, Seeing Insanity, and In The Garden (flower photographs of Alice Lease Dana). Burns Archive publications have become collector’s items, not only for unique subject matter, but also for artistic presentation.
