The Cat Street Gallery is thrilled to welcome Jasper Knight back for his second solo show in Hong Kong, 'Jumbo Kingdom'.
Jasper Knight is an acclaimed painter and a curator and promoter of Australian contemporary art. The Sydney based artist will exhibit a series of new bold paintings in a solo show inspired by Hong Kong.
In Knight’s past works, the materials used have added to the narrative content, or sometimes to the context, of the depicted scenes. However, Knight’s recent work has explored this relationship between material and subject, between constructed object and painted surface, in a more abstract way.
Knight’s paintings often employ bright colours in blocks, but avoid flatness and simplicity in form due to theorganic way in which the paint drips down the canvas. The works are also spatially innovative, playing with traditional perspective points. This particular technique draws on the relationship between high art and postcard photos but also between sculpture and painting.
Knight has had shows in Hong Kong, Berlin, London, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney and is the recipient of a number of major art prizes and grants.
