Originally from Tokyo, Japan, DRAGON76 moved to New York only two and a half years ago and has taken the city by storm, dressing it up with his larger than life mural pieces. Inspired by the city’s frenetic mix of people from different backgrounds, and its capacity for giving rise to new cultures and identities, DRAGON76 hones in on the concept of “coexistence” in his latest collection. On June 12, Compound Gallery will host the opening reception of ‘Coexist’ - DRAGON76’s first solo exhibit in New York. From 7pm to 10pm, attendees will be faced with a world of two opposites expressed through oil paint and graffiti, stencil technique and marker, tapestry and sculptures.
DRAGON76’s works intermingle past and future, stillness and motion, evil and justice; a concept of bringing together two or more unlike, opposite things of which Compound is all too familiar with. His works address some of the most important and universal themes available to us, and that each and everyone of us imagining and thinking about these questions on an individual basis can contribute to building a better future for all. Prior to the opening of the Compound Gallery exhibit, DRAGON76 will also paint an improvised and dynamic mural, adding his street art large scale painting skill to the South Bronx, close to the Compound Gallery.
DRAGON76 aims to spread a contemporary message of peace, harmony, and revolution, and exemplifies his core mission throughout his works from mural projects to the canvases included in ‘Coexist’. The opening reception and other artist related events throughout the month will be sponsored by Jagermeister, with featured cocktails flowing through the evening. Following the opening, ‘Coexist’ will run through July 12 with open hours on Fridays and Saturdays 12pm to 5pm and email appointment only Monday thru Thursday.
