No Place Like Home: Subcultural Art in Iran Today

Fri, Feb 19, 2021 from 6:00 – 7:00pm UTC
The Gallery of Everything presents a conversation between founder James Brett and Iranian artist and curator Morteza Zahedi on the emergence of non-academic art in Teheran and the Iranian diaspora. Although art has existed across Persia for thousands of years, the notion of the outsider is at odds with a culture that treasures the image in a more formal state. Zahedi, an artist himself, focusses on local makers who work outside the norms and within a self-appointed practice. His understanding of their visual impulse to describe has led to acceptance by the self-taught community in Europe and America. James Brett is the figurehead for The Museum of Everything, the travelling organisation which has showcased thousands of non-academic and private artists across the world, exhibiting throughout Europe and the UK, from Russia to Australia. Brett’s interest lies in the human impulse to make beyond formal boundaries, and in expanding the notion of art into one which eliminates the boundaries of the academy.
