Super Drawings from TMH Program. Booth C8
We are pleased to announce our participation at Art Rotterdam 2018 with the work of two Dutch master draftsmen, André de Jong and Hilarius Hofstede. The work of both artists has been part of our exhibition projects since 2014. In their idiosyncratic way, they address the global cultural consciousness by raising urgent culture vs. nature questions.
Hilarius Hofstede (1965, Hilversum, NL):
Historically, thinking about drawing mostly excluded color. But after the Cubist collage disrupted the planar surface of the picture, contemporary drawing shifted to provoke a palpable surface tension. Hilarius Hofstede uses paper and line to suggest the essential life-giving qualities of his subject matter.
Hofstede says: “More than a brushstroke, the drawing process communicates the territory of dream, and in my case, the savagery of the mind.”
André de Jong (1945, Bodegraven, NL):
With pencil, graphite, ink, and charcoal, André de Jong is a master of what are traditionally considered to be the materials of the medium. He pushes the limits of these tools to reflect a subtle boundary, a relational dynamic of the body and nature in each and every drawing.
According to de Jong: “Drawing is my search for the behavior of form and line on a flat surface, aiming to arrive at what I call “getekende beelden”—drawn image-planes, shaping our visual sense of self.”
