Surface of Color brings together work by ten artists who use abstraction as a conduit to examine ideas of personal identity, race and queerness. Utilizing the physical surface of the work of art as a skin which initially seduces the viewer through its appearance, these artists' work collectively gives way to, erupts, or obscures, their arts own personal, political or theoretical discourse. Through their ambiguity, the artworks in this exhibition respond, even if inadvertently, to an art historical narrative that demands the portrayal of identity to be didactic and explicit. Instead …
