Simons Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in CONTEXT Art Miami exhibit during Miami Art Basel Week, December 5 – 10, 2017.
Cuban multidisciplinary artist Leonor Anthony will curate the Simons Gallery exhibit. Her work will also be featured alongside Italian photographers Daria Cipriani and Roberto Polillo in the collaborative project titled, State of Being.
State of Being exposes the symbiotic, interconnected relationship between the city, its inhabitants, and their shared history, from the philosophical to the political. Through this project, Anthony, Polillo, and Cipriani seek to inspire global awareness and instill a spirit of civic engagement.
Originally a private collection based in Mexico City, including the works of Latin American and internationally renowned artists, Simons Gallery now boasts an ever-growing contemporary collection of emerging and established artists from around the world. This contemporary collection is in Miami, Florida and The Hague, Netherlands. Simons Gallery seeks to promote and support the relationship between the Latin American visionaries of yesteryear and the international contemporary artists of today.
Leonor Anthony is a multidisciplinary artist born in La Habana, Cuba. She is an accredited scholar, artist, photographer and published author. Leonor is recognized for using art as a vehicle of activism to bring awareness to issues ranging from systemic oppression, immigration, women’s empowerment, and environmental preservation. Leonor’s participation will serve as the continuation of the ongoing project: Color, A World View, which is being exhibited by the European Cultural Centre at the Palazzo Bembo in the Gran Canal during the 57th Venice Biennale of 2017.
Daria Cipriani was born in Tuscany, Italy and now lives in Vancouver, Canada. She is internationally known for her images of people, their struggles and moments of joy. Her love affair with the lens started at 19 when she boarded her first ship as a Merchant Marine officer, carrying a sextant and a small camera.
Roberto Polillo was born in Milano, Italy. His primary objective as an artist is to capture the genius loci of cities and countries. He goes in search of the souls of the cities of the world with his camera. And so was born “Impressions of the World,” an artistic adventure that began more than a decade ago. In his quest around the world, Roberto encounters cities of yesterday and cities of tomorrow. He investigates their different souls and relationships with their inhabitants, and exposes them in his particular artistic language. In this exhibit, Roberto presents two paradigmatic cities, in which past, present and future are intertwined: New York City and La Havana.
