Lakeville, CT., May 13, 2019 – Award-winning expressionistic painter Helen Cantrell opens the summer season at The White Gallery with her show "A Sense of Place." An opening artists' reception is Friday, May 24 from 5 – 8 pm and is co-sponsored by Lime
"We are excited to bring the expressive modernist landscapes of Helen Cantrell to our gallery," said Tino Galluzzo, director of The White Gallery. “I like to paint landscapes,” says Helen Cantrell, “urban, suburban, and shoreline in an expressionist gestural style.”
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cantrell has spent much of the past 50 years living along the Northeast coast painting landscapes and suburban scenes and the people who live there. Her inspiration to make art came at the early age of 13 years-old when she came across an article about Richard Diebenkorn and the Bay Area Figurative Art painters. Her work reflects these influences by featuring a mix of abstraction and figuration, with vibrant bright hues, visible brushwork, and a sense of calm.
“I love how she uses a few carefully positioned bands of color to create a view of an open landscape,” said Galluzzo. And, adds Cantrell, “I need lots of color in an image that strikes me. I use a lot of drips and flung slashes of paint.” The result is expressive pieces in which swaths of yellow, orange, and violet evoke paths and fields.
A resident of Old Lyme, CT., Cantrell spent the last 20 years creating her landscape paintings in an expressionist gestural style. From group shows to one-person exhibitions, Cantrell has shown her work extensively in the New England area. Her work is housed in collections at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Pfizer, Inc., New York Public Library, School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Slater Museum in Norwich, CT.
