A Mind of its Own

Based on her observations and personal life experiences, Maria Imaginário presents here an intimate reflection on how the ineffable flow of thoughts that pullulates in our minds operates, where reason and feelings, ideas and inspiration, either complete each other or fight each other off, vying for our attention – an exuberance in all dreamlike and fanciful which, frequently, seems to have a spirit and life of its own.

By sharing with us the wonderful world that seethes in her mind, that opens up and multiplies itself, that feeds itself and germinates, Maria Imaginário illustrates in “A Mind of its Own” the multiplicity of stimuli, both interior and exterior, as well as mental and creative processes that give life and form to her personal imaginarium. Presenting itself as an enactment imbued with the fantastic, the materialisation of this (self) consciousness is brought about in the form of short narrative pieces inhabited by a roster of small mischievous, lovable and chimeric characters that personify this continuous torrent of exertion and contemplation, of pleasure and anxiety – from the paintings brimming with intricate and delicate details to the sculptural group and central installation, where the expression of this world of colourful figures that live and sprout from her mind acquire depth and material substance and parade themselves, candidly yet in a complicit way, before our eyes.
