Van Rensburg Galleries exhibits at Pulse Miami 2018, featuring 3 artists whose work each explores a different aspect of self knowledge.
Work by Australian painter George Raftopoulos reflects a fierce exploration of universal themes of self across history and memory. With strong gestural engagements with the paint and canvas, new deconstructed figures emerge, deeply embedded in some kind of primordial truth. Raftopoulos is widely exhibited and collected worldwide, and in 2018 was a finalist in the Wynn, Sulman and Archibald Prizes, at the Art Gallery of NSW, Australia.
Photographic works by Los Angeles based artist Tami Bahat from her series Dramatis Personae, revisit portraiture, that most intimate and personal of artistic expressions. Fueled by a love of the Old Masters painters, and a belief in the beauty of the imperfect, her lens acts as a conduit that connects the past with today. This year Bahat has exhibited in the LA Art Show, Palm Beach Modern and Contemporary, Scope NY, and AIPAD NY.
Paintings by Australian Artist Gus Leunig revel in a deep appreciation of the Australian bush, where Gus has lived most of his life. Influenced by the aboriginal concept of the song lines, which he became familiar with during a stint alongside indigenous artists at the Lockhart River Arts Centre in Far North Queensland, this idea is then blended with a childlike wonder to create deeply intricate maps of imagination that bristle with life, and resolve themselves differently with each viewing.
Van Rensburg Galleries, under the direction of founder Beulah van Rensburg, seeks to faithfully represent the artists with whom she works. She insists on personal connection with each artist, in order to understand their intention and faithfully translate that into each exhibition. Founded in 2013 in Hong Kong, Van Rensburg Galleries works with contemporary and emerging artists which often bring a figurative sensibility that is rich and poignant, but also laced with wit and humour, hinting at the neuroses of modern life which ultimately give way to beauty.
