The exhibition is dedicated to the famous cycle "Life of Christ" or the Gospel series. Vassily Polenov considered that project to be the main work of his life. His aim was to depict the earthly life of Christ.
Vassily Polenov ‘s dream was to paint all those lands where Jesus of Nazareth preached, to see the Temple, where the action of his most famous painting "Christ and the Sinner" took place. Vassily Polenov set on a trip to holy places, visited Jerusalem, Jericho, Tiberias, Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and Samaria, he created a huge number of sketches. During his two journeys to Palestine (in 1881-1882 and in 1899), his extraordinary gift as the landscape painter was manifested with the new force with his plain air works, in his ability to express the mood subtly and emotionally - sunlit peaks of the southern mountains, spots of cypress trees against the blue sky. For the first time the following works from the Gospel cycle - "In the Land of Tyre", "Martha took Him to her House", "Who People Worship Me For ?" - will be on display. Also there are sketches to the work "Christ and the Sinner" as well as graphic works by V.Polenov from the same cycle, photographs from his journeys to the Middle East, his notebooks and even the manuscript of the philosophic work "Jesus of Galilee". Also the one will see the portrait of Isaac Levitan in oriental costume (Isaak Levitan posed for the central image of Christ) and the painting "Tiberias", recently donated to the museum's collection. The exhibition is a part of the International Arts Festival "In Quest of the Promised Land".
