THE BIG PICTURE | Miklos GAÁL
02-24 MARCH 2018
VILTIN Gallery proudly introduces the first solo show of Finnish artist Miklos GAÁL. ’THE BIG PICTURE’ is a selection of the artist’s emblematic and internationally recognized ’Imitation of Life’ photo series. Linked to his earlier period, the series was first shown in solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Göttingen, the Stadtgalerie Kiel, and the Kunsthalle Tübingen during 2004.
GAÁL started his career as graphic designer who was interested in the direct physical and spontaneous process of image creation in drawing. Finding finally the photo, he was concerned with the operational process of the apparatus besides its technical and industrial character. Aiming at their extensive and accurate presentation, his attention was devoted to the capturing ability of the photo and its relation to time and the opportunity of imaging the moment.
His oeuvre explores the artistic presentation of the so-called reality. He is interested in the philosophical spectrum of the viewer’s perception: he looks for the connection between our personal reality model and our collective reality. GAÁL engaged in the semiotics between the analogue and digital, and the still and moving image over the years. He studied the aspect of the final exhibiting form of the medium on the meaning and the possible interpretation of the picture. Besides the technical use of the photo as medium, photo theory is also the center of his research.
The images of the artist made with analogue technique allow for variation in the depth of focus within a single photograph. It is not the image, that we see, but the act of seeing that corresponds to the relationship of each idea to reality he methodically brings to consciousness in his works. GAÁL’s completely new perspective directs the attention toward the process of the spectator’s perception of reality — which is the true reference point of his work.
The photographs of ’THE BIG PICTURE’ enable us to experience the physical path of vision through the different focal points and the rich details within one single image. Finding the focus of a given photo, we shall necessarily follow the artist’s logic. The photos are distant images of sandy beachside, street parade, harbor, sport field, or an animated metropolitan intersection. GAÁL seizes the essence of everyday spaces by putting these cliché-like recreational activities into remote perspective. The complete series therefore becomes the general archetype collection of typing places, a collocation of the active moments and experiences beyond the time and place anecdote.
Born in Espoo, Finland in 1974, Miklos GAÁL currently lives and works in Amsterdam and Helsinki. He graduated from the University of Art and Design Helsinki as graphic designer in 1999, and as photographer in 2004. He was the student of The Göteborg University - School of Photography and Film between 1997-1998. He was the resident artist of the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam between 2008-2009. He received his researcher degree at the University of Amsterdam in 2015.
GAÁL’s works are included in several private and public collections including the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne (CH); the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki (FI); the Kunsthalle in Emden (DE), the FNAC Collection (FR); the DZ Bank AG Collection (DE) and the Calder Foundation (US).
