Vivid Art Gallery welcomes back Indiana artist Dorothy Alig as its Featured Artist in November. Alig will be on hand to meet with visitors at the gallery’s First Friday Art Opening on November 3rd. Refreshments and live music by jazz duo Roy McGrath and Sam Peters will round out the event, which runs from 5-8pm.
Alig, who was the gallery’s very first Featured Artist last year, has also been one of the gallery’s most popular. She will be presenting nine new pieces at her exhibit, Lost Terrain. This new work explores the concept of entropy, the law of nature that can be defined as the increasing lack of order or predictability. Says Alig, “I consider it relevant in these days of political, economic, and social uncertainty, speeded up by technology.”
Exhibiting her trademark brilliant colors and exciting layers of pattern, Alig’s new work is engaging, drawing the viewer in to take a closer look. About how her process relates to entropy Alig explains, “I begin with a fairly concrete idea and a spontaneous gesture on the paper. Then I respond to the marks I have made again and again until the thing is resolved. I try to remain open to new possibilities as I allow a transformation of the original idea into something completely new and unexpected.”
Also on hand on First Friday will be Vivid’s November Local Artist, Anne Smith Stephan with her exhibit, Outer Edges. Smith Stephan, who lives and works in Wilmette, paints large abstract canvases with great movement and energy. Working primarily in black and white, she builds up as many as 20 or more layers of paint on the canvas, then scrapes some away to reveal what’s below. The result is a luminous that appears lit from within.
Please join us as we celebrate these two artists!
