ON CANAL, Caroline Larsen emphasizes her newest works on canvas and sculpture work with the textural element of fake flowers, nestled and curtained around the space. The flower shop-like decor is juxtaposed with depictions of mountains and fiery car crashes, embodying a full spectrum of Larsen’s creative practice.
Larsen marries her painted scenery with a distinctive, playful method of piping out oil paint like cake frosting. The result is a high-impasto, relief where texture, color, and imagery merge together to create figuration. Larsen plays with ways of weaving, outlining, and filling colors together within the pictorial plane. Colors are blocked together, layered, and braided like a basket, creating fields of vivid forms that fade in and out of recognition, heightening a tension between a reality and abstract fantasy.
