Shapes of Time
July 19 – September 15, 2019
“My first impulse was to develop a language of forms that could communicate the feeling of a different dimension of space-time, thinking the world as a constellation of related forms, places, ideas and people.” -- Marie-Dolma Chophel
W.MING is pleased to present Shapes Of Time, an online solo exhibition featuring 15 works by Marie-Dolma Chophel (b.1984). The exhibition provides an outstanding selection of her paintings inspired by her research on science and technology spanning the last 7 years.
Marie-Dolma was born and raised in France to a French mother and Tibetan father. Through her connection to Buddhism and Tibetan culture, dreams of its land came to shape her relation to nature. Such heritage, infused in her observations of micro and macro landscape, flow into cardinal concerns of time and space in her works.
Her works feature atmospheric and suggestive depictions of landscape and cosmic territory, where organic elements and stringent nets unfold into multi-layered constellations. These “nets” are borrowed and transformed by Marie-Dolma from those means used in topography and science to mark and measure space and time. Marie-Dolma employs acrylic, oil, spray paint, paint marker and enamel in her painting process, in a fantastic confluence of materials.
The layers of paint and lines defy space and time to create - or destroy - worlds, representing the flux of interconnections and contrasts between the concrete and the abstract, the natural and the artificial, the real and the virtual. By this, she reveals the multi-dimension of our contemporary world, from the tectonic to the technological, exploring its ever-flowing terrains and mapping her relationship to it.
For Marie-Dolma, the painting process itself distills her attitude toward these bewildering territories. “Painting is a slow process acting as a form of resistance to the very fast paced outside world”. Within the delicate depiction and contemplation of our world in her paintings, a unique immersive visual experience is brought to the viewers, an experience as abstract as fables, as mysterious as dreams.
Marie-Dolma Chophel graduated of her MFA from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, France. Her work has been shown throughout the U.S. in museums and galleries, with a recent solo show at Equity Gallery (NYC) in 2019, and in group exhibitions including W.Ming Art (NYC), the Berkeley Museum BAMPFA (CA), 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel (NYC), the Queens Museum (NY), CU Art Museum (CO), the Fleming Museum (VT) and the Dorsky Museum (NY). Chophel also exhibited her work in London and Hong Kong at the Rossi & Rossi Gallery and in Paris with the Atelier Clot. She has been awarded of a Residency at the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts (NY) in 2014. Chophel currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
