We’re pleased to introduce Takuma Tanaka’s paintings.
What is the painter "Takuma Tanaka"
It was painting therapy that inspired him to start painting. He originally wanted to become a lawyer, but after failing the bar exam twice, his health deteriorated and he adopted painting therapy as a form of rehabilitation. Later, influenced by street performer Peter Frankl, he began selling paintings on the streets of Urawa and Ginza, ,Japan, which led him to become a painter. The vibrancy of his paintings is born from a pure inner impulse, creating a unique order. Subjects are adorned with simple forms, and color and line are often reduced to the essential. He tells it this way. ”I myself am interested in our consciousness in the world since my childhood. So I have read many books from my youth. In study of that, I have a great interest in biology. In learning this subject, I took an interest and studied Takashi Tachibana. He was called a giant of intelligence and taught at Tokyo University. I stopped learning at other Universities and tried to enter Tokyo University to learn directly from him. But as result, I could not do that, so I studied him through his published books. I think art is related to many studies. For example, using pigment and so on, it’s related to chemicals. And we must learn by selling artworks, in both economic and marketing terms. And more when we paint the work, we must learn psychology to attract people. In addition to this making of intense artworks, we must learn the law. By looking like this, we must learn many studies. My theme is from DNA’s Problem, Tree Man series, Cake Ship series or from the economy and sociology- Capitalism series, Human Sushi series. It seems all themes are not connected with each other, but I am influenced by the study of Takashi Tachibana. He teaches me that it is important that every study relates and is connected to each other. So I can continue art activity from now. I wish and would like to continue to learn, study and have an interest in many things.”
Public collection
His masterpiece "Blue Rose" is in the collection of the Ulster National Gallery in England. This work, in which a tree grows out of the head of a seated woman, is one of his representative series, "Tree man series”

The artist has this to say about this series. ‘A tree is growing from the head of a person like hair. Ironically anthropocentricism puts people in the crisis around the world. However homo-sapiens is superior to other creatures? Never. According to molecular biology and genetic researches, homo-sapiens differs very little from other creatures. There is a only 1% of difference between human and chimpanzee. Most of DNA are the same between human beings and other creatures.
If this is true, it is not so correct to think ourselves special. We and others are almost the same. I conceive it is possible the genes idea of human being's growing hair and the seeds growing grass is very similar. "The Tree Man series" expresses that human beings are not special, an existence equal to others.’
What is the "skull" that Takuma Tanaka depicts.
He often paints with a 'skull' motif. The skulls are so diverse in their expressions of joy, sadness, anger, anguish, melancholy, and love. Humans need to glamorize their bodies and humanity in order to live, but eventually they die and leave this world as bones. He paints skulls because his paintings reflect his belief that looking at a skull, rather than the body that covers the surface, may be a journey to find one's true self.

Human Sushi Series
The satirize anastrophe of the predator-prey interaction. Human beings are eaten as sushi. In Japan, conveyor belt sushi restaurant is very popular. But Takuma Tanaka paints Human plates on the conveyor belt.Human beings had been thinking themselves as the king of all existence and having control all over the world. But in this modern society, we face many problems. We lost control anymore just like sushi on the conveyor belt. Through this motif, paradoxically we can see the cruelty of humanism.
And it is the Cat-Rabbit that eats humans as human sushi. Cat-Rabbit is an original character from the “Human Sushi Series.” They eat human, but they are not monsters. They love, sing, dance, and experience sadness and happiness, just like us.
