“In an age of digitalisation and image overload, I believe it is important to reinterpret painting as an analogue, sensual genre and to exploit its temporal.”—Ádám Dóra
Dóra ́s first artist residency experience in Spain took place in 2023 with an application to the Piramidón Centre D'Art Contemporani. He got impressed by the extraordinary atelier house and fascinating catalan culture, so this year he came back for a 5 month period for work in a spacious and bright studio on the 13th floor overlooking the city. Over the past several years, he has devoted considerable time to an artistic exploration that merges the whimsical concept of fictional sneakers with the structure of landscapes. This combination has allowed him to create a distinctive body of work that captures the imagination. Following this period of exploration, he ventured into the abstraction of food, creating paintings that transform everyday sustenance into vibrant canvases. In his most recent exhibition, organised by Einspach Fine Art & Photography in Budapest, Dóra showcased his evolving artistic journey by focusing on the human body and the materiality of clothing. He used large canvases to explore how fabric interacts with the form it covers, emphasizing texture and the essence of the materials. This thematic shift highlights his versatility and willingness to delve into new subjects and methods. Currently, Dóra is engaged with the questions of framing and packaging within the realm of painting. His canvases feature motifs drawn from a variety of sources, including fashion, food, architectural structures, and other everyday observations. Through these elements, he develops a broad and nuanced field of interpretation while maintaining a unique and recognizable visual language. In an age dominated by digitalization and an overwhelming influx of images, Dóra believes it is crucial to reinterpret painting as an analog, sensual medium. He aims to harness its temporal potential, creating works that offer a respite from the fast-paced digital world and invite viewers to engage more deeply with the physical body of pictures. A notable new direction in Dóra's work is his decision to retain the natural color and texture of the canvas. This approach marks a departure from his previous techniques and introduces a raw, organic quality to his paintings. By appropriating this visual element and integrating it into his work, taps into themes where natural textiles play a significant role as sources of inspiration. This new focus enriches his artistic narrative, offering a fresh perspective on the interplay between the material and cultural identity.
