Kurt Giehl's unconventional path to fine art has led to a remarkable and evolving body of work.
Giehl's journey began far from the typical artist's studio. He studied computer science and business at college and spent most of his career on Wall Street in Investment Banking. It wasn't until he reached the age of 50 that he decided to pursue his long-held passion for art. Leaving New York City, Giehl and his husband moved to East Hampton, where he immersed himself in the local art scene. There, he learned techniques, color theory, and the fundamentals of oil painting from seasoned Hampton-based artists. Inspired by the natural beauty and unique light of the Hamptons, Giehl began painting daily, channeling his meticulous nature and creative spirit into his work. Giehl’s artistic portfolio can be divided into two main series: Seascapes and Block paintings. Despite their apparent differences, both series strive to evoke a sense of tranquility and order. His Seascapes, often beginning with a flesh-colored acrylic undercoat, showcase layers of oil paint applied with brayers, creating abstract compositions of clouds and sea that reflect the serene beauty of the Hamptons. On the other hand, Giehl’s Block series is marked by its structured approach, where each piece is treated like a mathematical equation, with predetermined block sizes, palettes, and compositions all variables in that equation. This process-driven methodology involves painting the sides of each block first, followed by the front, and applying various techniques such as brushing, brayering, and stamping to build up layers of paint.
Seascapes
Kurt Giehl’s seascape paintings offer a modern take on a classic subject, using a deliberate, subdued palette and simplicity of form to transcend traditional seascapes. His works are designed to evoke a sense of calm and tranquility, drawing viewers into a surreal, otherworldly scene. Each piece is an exaggerated interpretation of his inspiration, both in color and composition.

Blocks
The Block Series transforms static blocks into dynamic compositions. Each piece, composed of hundreds of individual blocks, creates an illusion of motion as light, shadows, and the viewer’s perspective shift throughout the day. The textured, angular arrangements play with balance and chance, making the blocks seem to move and change, captivating the viewer with their ever-evolving appearance.
