Icons & Abstractions: Miya Bailey's Radical Art Odyssey

In a rare glimpse behind the collector's curtain, Miya Bailey unveils a curated selection of works from his acclaimed 7th and 8th solo exhibits—pieces that have yet to find their permanent homes. This exhibition offers art enthusiasts and collectors an intimate opportunity to engage with works that have largely remained hidden in Bailey's most private creative conversations.
Each piece is a deliberate deconstruction, mapping cultural iconography through unexpected materials and design.
For 32 years, Asheville native Miya Bailey has been a transformative force in Atlanta's art scene, weaving complex narratives through his distinctive visual language. As City of Ink approaches its 18th year, Bailey unveils works from two of his groundbreaking exhibits, "Government Cheese" and "MyMy", at Old Rabbit Gallery—a testament to his innovative approach to contemporary art. "Government Cheese" represents a radical departure from traditional painting techniques. Bailey eschews brushes entirely, instead using found objects from Peters Street Station to create textured compositions that speak to the raw, geometric textures of Southern Black experience. Each piece is a deliberate deconstruction, mapping cultural iconography through unexpected materials and design. In "MyMy", Bailey elevates his artistic dialogue, blending abstract expressionism with figurative depth. Here, he explores intersections of family, fashion, emotion, and cultural references—drawing from the visual lexicon of 80s and 90s Black culture while simultaneously commenting on contemporary social landscapes. Curated by Elijah Green, the collection offers an intimate journey through Bailey's visual memoir. Nestled in Atlanta's historic Castleberry Hill Art District, Old Rabbit Gallery provides an intimate canvas for Bailey's transformative work. Visitors can schedule tours by contacting curator Elijah Green at [email protected]—an invitation to experience a pivotal moment in Bailey's artistic evolution.
